CAL Orgs Convene for Cultural Night
The College of Arts and Letters (CAL) recently held its Cultural Night at the CAL atrium last July 3, 2009. Starting at around 6:00 p.m., it ended at around 8:00 p.m., with performances from different CAL-based groups.
The cultural night replaced the freshman orientation program, which was originally CAL’s way of welcoming this year’s freshmen.
The first performance was a musical one by UP Kontemporaryong Gamelan Pilipino (UP Kontra-gapi), showcasing their prowess with ethnic musical instruments. UP Sinagbayan followed with an interpretative dance number.
UP Ugnayan ng Manunulat (UP UGAT) and UP Quill both recited poetry while the UP Deutscher Verein (German Club) sang a German song, accompanied by acoustic guitar.
The UP Writer’s Club had a very short presentation followed by a multi-lingual dialogue by the UP Speech Communication Association (UP SPECA).
The UP Singing Ambassadors (UPSA) performed three songs while in full costume.
The UP Anime Manga Enthusiasts (UP AME) performed live-dubbing followed by a Japanese song also accompanied by an acoustic guitar.
Lastly, the Student Alliance for the Advancement of Democratic Rights in UP (STAND UP), performed a song number. While performing, videos from the different groups present were projected on one wall.
All of the presentations were well-received by the CAL freshmen. There were free food and drinks handed out during the latter part of the program, provided by the CAL organizations in attendance.
The cultural night was a big success; not only was it a way to welcome the freshmen, but also an opportunity for them to see what student organizations they can join during their stay in UP.
